5030 - Student Cell Phones and Pagers

Students are prohibited from using cellular phones or pagers while participating in ESU 4 programs, except as provided in this policy.

Students may use cell phones or pagers before and after instructional time, so long as they do not create a distraction or a disruption. Students may not have cell phones or pagers while they are in locker rooms, classrooms or restrooms.

Students may not use cell phones or pagers while riding in vehicles owned by ESU 4 or operated by ESU 4 staff unless the student has express permission to do so from the driver of the vehicle.

Students shall be personally and solely responsible for the security of their cell phones and pagers. The service unit is not responsible for theft, loss or damage of a cell phone or any calls made on a cell phone.

By bringing cell phones and pagers to the ESU 4 program, students and their parents/guardians consent to the reasonable search of those devices.

Students who violate this policy will have their cell phones or pagers confiscated immediately. The administration will return confiscated devices to the offending student's parent or guardian, after meeting with the parent or guardian to discuss the rule violation. Students who violate this policy may, at the discretion of the program administrator, be reported to their resident school district for discipline pursuant to the resident school district's student code of conduct and, in extreme cases, students may have their contract to participate in ESU 4 programs cancelled due to the student's repeated violation of this policy.
